6:40pm – Pre-concert talk for ticket holders with Artistic Director Morna Edmundson and Kathleen Allan
7:30pm – Dunbar Ryerson United Church (2195 W. 45th Avenue, Vancouver)
Memorable collaborations with composers have been an integral part of Elektra’s three decades of accomplishment. Shining Light: Celebrating Women Composers will be a rich feast of music by living Canadian and American female composers and arrangers, including Abbie Betinis, Jocelyn Hagen, Beth Hanson, Ramona Luengen, Katrin Lohuaru, Kate MacColl, Joanne Metcalf, Joni Mitchell, Ruth Moody, Sarah Quartel, Jane Siberry, and Leslie Uyeda. This concert marks the start of a three-year project of focused collaboration between Elektra and emerging and established women composers and includes the premiere of Primary Colours: Three canticles for women’s choir and piano by our featured composer, Vancouver-based Kathleen Allan.
Joining Elektra for the closing set of this concert will be the 12 handpicked singers of our Mira Youth Mentorship program. And we’re inviting our alumni to join us in the closing piece, Jane Siberry’s beautiful “The Valley”. We welcome to the audience the York House School choir, the first participants in our new Girls Sing program. It’s a busy and exciting night in Elektra’s season!
