Commissions & Dedications

If you have a special occasion to commemorate (anniversary, birth, milestone, memorial), you may want to consider supporting the creation of a new piece of music for Elektra with a major gift. This centuries-old tradition places the donor’s name and dedication at the top of the printed score.

Each donor will receive a  special edition copy of the score signed by the composer and Elektra’s Artistic Director, two complimentary tickets to the premiere performance, and a commemorative recording of the premiere.

The following works will be written for Elektra in the next few seasons. Biographies of the composers are available upon request. Please contact Elektra's General Manager , if you would like more information about supporting the commissioning fee with a charitable donation. Or call the choir office at 604-739-1255.

The first two works on the list are for a shared concert in April 2010 called Canadian Voices. The concert is a co-production of Elektra Women’s Choir and Chor Leoni, focusing on contemporary Canadian works, to take place twice at Ryerson United Church. The choirs will sing major portions of the concert separately, joining together at key points in the program for several mixed choir pieces. Jocelyn Morlock and Kristopher Fulton will be writing works to be premiered at this concert.

Premiere date: April 10, 2010
By Vancouver composer Jocelyn Morlock
Status: not yet supported / dedication available
Jocelyn Morlock’s work will be written for treble voices a cappella. The text is by Canadian poet Alan Ashton. The finished composition will be delivered to Elektra by January 31, 2010.

Premiere date: April 10, 2010
By Vancouver composer Kristopher Fulton

Status: not yet supported / dedication available
Unlike the other commissioned works on this list, Kristopher Fulton’s work will be written for a choir of mixed voices; in other words, for both Elektra (sopranos and altos) and Chor Leoni (tenors and basses) together. Although the choirs will split the cost of the commission, a single gift will be sought to evenly offset the costs borne by the two organizations. The text will be chosen by the spring of 2009, and the finished work delivered to Elektra and Chor Leoni by January 31, 2010.

Premiere date: December 2010
By Vancouver composer Rupert Lang

Status: not yet supported / dedication available
A Christmas-themed work for Elektra together with Vancouver musicians flautist Lorna McGhee and harpist Heidi Krutzen, this piece will be performed at Chez Nous: Christmas with Elektra on Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Ryerson United Church. It will be the second piece Rupert Lang has written for Elektra, the last being Lullaby for a previous Chez Nous.

Premiere date: Spring 2011
By Vancouver composer Stephen Smith

Status: not yet supported / dedication available
Elektra has performed many fine works by the choir’s accompanist and noted composer / arranger, Dr. Stephen Smith. This new work will be written for the choir’s next international tour: exact date and location TBA. Depending on the text chosen, this will probably be a piece that features Smith on piano with the choir.

Premiere date: TBC
By Hungarian composer György Orbán

Status: tentatively supported privately
Elektra plans to commission Hungarian composer György Orbán, whose published works the choir has enjoyed for several years, to write a piece for Elektra. The nature of the work, accompaniment, choice of text, etc. will be discussed with the composer. The logistics and costs of this are currently being explored. Please inquire as to current status, timeline, and nature of the work and premiere.
