Maquerule

Program Notes:

Poor Maquerule! This Colombian folk tune tells us he’s a poor baker from Andagoya, going broke selling bread on credit. To cap off his misfortune, when he gets back from a delivery in Condoto, he finds his wife has gone off with someone else. “Knead the bread, Maquerule, work it out!”

Conductor Notes:

SSA and optional percussion. I first heard this coy, playful arrangement performed by Cantoria Alberto Grau, the wonderful Venezuelan women’s choir led by Maria Guinand. I’ve also heard successful performances on YouTube using acoustic bass alongside the percussion.
