On November 23 and 24, 2019, Elektra Women’s Choir’s beloved concert evoked the warmth and wonder of the Christmas season at Chez Nous: Christmas with Elektra. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Morna Edmundson, Canada’s celebrated Elektra welcomed special guests, Vetta Chamber Players, Joan Blackman, Artistic Director and violinist, Rebecca Wenham, cellist, and the Vancouver Bach Children’s Chorus, Marisa Gaetanne, Music Director.
A wealth of beloved carols from across Europe took centre stage as Elektra sang Still, Still, Still (Austria), I Saw Three Ships (England), Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella (France), Maria durch ein Dornwald ging (Germany), Deck the Hall (Wales), Carol of the Bells (Ukraine) and the quirky and fun Spanish carol, Los Peces en el Rìo in an arrangement by Toronto’s Hilario Duran. Opening the concert was the timeless chant melody Veni, Emmanuel (O Come, O Come, Emmanuel) in a stunning arrangement by Sweden’s Ulrika Emanuelsson. Audiences also heard original works such as Mark Sirett’s Little Tree, a setting of E. E. Cummings’ poem, a dramatic new setting of O Magnum Mysterium by Argentinean composer Santiago Veros, a lyrical setting with cello of the same text by Switzerland’s Ivo Antognini, and Stephen Smith’s bird-song-inspired Shakespeare setting So Hallowed is That Time. Closing the evening was Susan Edwards’ new arrangement of O Little Town of Bethlehem. Vetta Chamber Players brought excerpts from Glière’s Eight Duets Op. 30 for violin and cello and the Vancouver Bach Children’s Chorus performed Mozart’s Laudate Dominum, Es ist ein Ros entsprungen from Germany, and Nutcracker in Three Minutes, a fun spin on Tchaikovsky’s famous Christmas piece.
“It’s a Christmas tradition. I take friends to this concert as a Christmas gift to them. We all had a wonderful time. It started the Christmas season for us.”
