Women of the Italian Baroque

March 7, 2020, 7:30pm

Pacific Spirit United Church, 2205 West 45th Avenue, Vancouver

Pre-concert talk with Alex Weimann:  6:45 pm

Our audience was immersed in exquisite music from 17th Century Italy as Canada’s celebrated Elektra Women’s Choir and guest conductor, Alexander Weimann perform virtuosic music by seven women composers of the baroque era. Focusing on the vast legacy of Isabella Leonarda (1620-1704), this is a program of music first heard in Ursuline convents across Italy. Discover with Elektra composers Caterina Assandra, Raphaella Aleotti, Bianca Maria Meda, Maria Xaviera Peruchona, Chiara Margarita Cozzolani, and Suplitia Cesis. “The women who created this music spent their lives from about age 16 in the convent”, explains Elektra’s Artistic Director Morna Edmundson. “Many were accomplished musicians from well-educated families when they arrived, and contributed through singing, playing, and composing to a flourishing community of learning and artistic accomplishment. These composers are not well-known to us because few were connected to the music publishing world, but their compositions are a fantastic discovery for Elektra and a treat for the listener.”

Alexander Weimann, Artistic Director of the Pacific Baroque Orchestra and early music specialist, directed Elektra and an ensemble of some of Vancouver’s finest early music instrumentalists in a captivating evening of beautiful music. Joining Elektra for part of the program were the twelve auditioned singers of the Mira Youth Mentorship Program.
