Huron Carol

Conductor Notes:

We used this highly effective arrangement to open our 2015 Chez Nous concert. Starting with one handbell tolling the tonic and the melody over an alto drone, the organ start by playing on the refrains only. The harmonic language and density of the texture grow steadily to a big, triumphant and somewhat exotic finish. We sang this surrounding the audience. Could also be used as a processional.

Composer / Arranger Notes:

SSA and organ, optional hand bells; Commissioned by the Ottawa Central Choir, Barbara Clark, director. The Native American (Huron) interpretation of Jesus birth and the 16th century French melody of this carol are placed in a setting of austerity and simple reverence. Optional hand bells further evoke the atmosphere of stark winter.
