There is No Rose

Conductor Notes:

Don’s skill in choral writing show clearly in this treble (SSAA div a cappella with soprano solo) voicing of his There is No Rose, originally written for mixed choir. On the familiar words, his original melody is layered with sustained chords. A contrasting middle section takes the “Gloria” words of the angels to the shepherds in an energetic, rhythmic section. The opening melody returns and the piece ends with shimmering chords as each singer takes her own tempo under the soloist’s melody.
