Pure Elektra

Ryerson United Church

For the second concert in our 25th Anniversary season, I wanted to offer not a retrospective or “greatest hits” concert, but a solid program of the kind of repertoire that represents Elektra and our role in the women’s choir world. It was about the past, the present, and the future. So it contained contemporary music (lots of it – by emerging and established composers), a world premiere (“Joy” by Kathleen Allan), music of other eras (Legrenzi and Rheinberger), a variety of languages and cultures, and a few folk songs. Our wonderful accompanist, Stephen Smith, was represented with an original piece (the encore “what i want”) and an arrangement (“Love Went a-Riding” by Frank Bridge) as well as having a major role on the piano. Our 12 Mira Mentorship Program singers were part of the last set, which represented the future of Elektra and was a wonderful addition to the sound.
