Conductor Notes:
Christmas Reverie is a brand new melody and lyric by Canadian composer Don Macdonald, strongly influenced by the 40s jazz sound. Written for SSAA choir, piano and acoustic bass, it’s a secular Christmas jazz waltz that the choir and audience all loved. We had one of Canada’s leading jazz bass players with us on the gig, so I asked for an extended solo for her. Several solo opportunities for singers are incorporated, too. A very successful and enjoyable new piece for the Christmas repertoire. The lyric is about hearing a busker on a street corner, reliving memories of favourite Christmases past, and being grateful that songs can connect us to such memories. Woven in are snippets of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen and Carol of the Bells (the latter replaced by O Holy Night in the published version.)
