Dobri Denek

Program Notes:

A traditional song in the Eastern European style of women’s singing, with mixed metres and a compelling tone, Dobri Denek celebrates “our beautiful village”.

Conductor Notes:

Elektra was introduced to this short, a cappella, up tempo Croatian folk song by The Balkan Babes, a women’s ensemble from Victoria, BC. The Balkan Babes were one of the invited groups at our Tapestry International in 2009 and taught this piece to the massed choirs from Canada, the US, and Japan. We later performed it at the Cultural Olympiad at Vancouver, Canada’s Winter Olympic Games, in a concert called “Welcome the World” involving several fine Vancouver choirs performing in as many languages as possible!
