Movement #2 from the larger suite, Snewíyalh tl’a Staḵw (Teachings of the Water). A collaborative project with the Vancouver-area Squamish First Nation, this short, a cappella work is suitable for indoor and outdoor performances. Several videos are available on the Elektra YouTube channel.
The title, “when you were born”, conveys the belief that birth is sacred because we all come from the water found in our mother’s womb. The sung Squamish text is only these three words of the title, making this less challenging for a choir to learn than one might expect.
