Program Notes:
This carol first appeared in 1833. The verses progress through the story of Jesus told in his own voice. An innovative feature of the telling is that Jesus’ life is repeatedly characterized as a dance, a device later used in the modern hymn Lord of the Dance.
Conductor Notes:
This is the closing movement of Rutter’s larger work “Dancing Day”. In 2010, I used it as the closing piece of our Christmas concert and, since we had piano, harp, and flute available, Stephen Smith did an orchestration for me using all of them.
